I spent Saturday afternoon out on the Monterey Bay with the folks from Sanctuary Cruises. Of the many great wildlife experiences I have had, this rates among the most extraordinary. We started off finding a Humpback whale in about 20 feet of water. Since these animals are 15 feet across, this meant that whenever it rolled we were treated to a view of a tail, a fin, or even the entire length of the whale. After spending so much time with this whale that we got bored (amazing in itself) we headed out to the Monterey Marine Canyon to try our luck.
As the sun was starting to set we came across a pod of Orcas (Killer Whales). One huge male, 2 females, and 3 calves splashed around our boat for 30 minutes. Curious calves would raise vertically out of the water to look at us. The females breached and jumped clear of the water in a stunning display of aerial athleticism, and finally the giant male exploded from the ocean in a breach that left us all completely awe struck. Monterey Bay is an extraordinary place. I can hardly believe that it is only an hour's drive from my house.
