On Saturday I witnessed a sole sea lion being hunted and ultimately killed by a pod of Orcas on the Monterey Bay. The Orcas tormented the sea lion for a while as it tried to escape until, finally tired of playing, a single Orca flung the sea lion into the sky in a death blow. A California Sea Lion is about 6 feet long and weighs about a third of a ton. An Orca (Killer Whale) is about 25 feet long and grows to 6 tons. There really was no competition. The following 3 images took less than 1/2 a second - an amazing spectacle of power and predation!
