The highlight of my week in Kenya was watching a 10 year old Maasai girl stand up and read her favorite book to her class. The thing that made this so special was that the book was on a Kindle, and that the rest of the class had Kindles as well. These Kindles were delivered a year ago when The Kilgoris Project partnered with Worldreader to provide e-Readers to the Intimigom school.
These Kindles have been integrated into the daily routine in both kindergarden and elementary classes and the results have been extraordinary. Kids are reading more, test scores are up, parents are excited about their kid's education. One concrete indicator of the success of this program is the growth of the school population. Last June Intimigom had 208 students. Now, it has 360 kids and is widely seen as the most advanced school in the area. The quality of education at the school will only get better as this week we delivered another 50 Kindles and 12,000 more books to Intimigom. It's been quite an amazing first year for Kindles in Kilgoris!
