I feel so fortunate to live near the Monterey Bay, and for the countless organizations that devote themselves to protecting this amazing ecosystem. 20 years ago, humpbacks were rarely seen, and blue whales were not seen at all. Now, there are whales all year round - Orcas, Humpbacks, and Blues are in the Bay now. Grey whales start arriving in December.
Yesterday we came across about a dozen humpback whales that were feeding on anchovies and krill. The folks on the Sea Wolf II got a nice surprise as a humpback surfaced right at the bow of the boat. After we left the humpbacks and headed home we had a short visit with a pod of 4 Orcas - capping off a truly spectacular day.
