Nestled at the eastern edge of South Africa is the Phinda Reserve. This place is positively overflowing with wildlife: lions, elephants, cheetah, rhino, leopard, hippo, giraffe, … you name it. it seems to be there.
While at Phinda I had my favorite wildlife experience yet. As we sat by a water hole more than 60 elephants came down to drink, swim and play in the water. It was extraordinary to see elephants simply play and have fun. I know some people will think I’m anthropomorphizing but the more I learn about elephants, the more I have come to understand they have a profound consciousness – they mourn their dead, communicate over tens of miles, recognize each other after long period of separation, and clearly have a sense of fun. They splashed, played, and even dunked each other while we sat and watched.
